“Satan stirreth them up continually to anger one with another”

As I’ve posted before, since being released as a bishop, I have been a Stake Institute Teacher. During this past school year, we studied the Book of Mormon. We finished the course last week, and I have to admit that in all my years in the Church, it was the best time I’ve had reading

Why do we need prophets?

That was the title of the first article in the March 2012 Ensign. The first article is the one we are to use when home teaching. I reviewed the article before going out a couple of weeks ago, and it definitely got me thinking. I understand the theory of why we need prophets… they are

A couple of comments from Fast & Testimony Meeting recently

Since General Conference as at the beginning of April, the monthly Fast Sunday was on March 25. As is usually the case, there were some testimonies I found to be very touching, and others not so much. That isn’t meant to criticize anyone, it’s just the truth. I’m sure there were people who didn’t appreciate

Encouraging children to read

I’m sure many of you have heard that last week Sister Julie B Beck answered questions that had been submitted by members on the Mormon Channel. A lot of the “buzz” has been about her comments about blogging. She says that women have always needed a way to communicate, and as long as there is

Be good for something

Last week I went out for dinner with the two men who were my counselors when the bishopric I was in was released. We went to a cheap Chinese food place down the street from my house and had a great time talking about life, our time together, and more. Normally I’m not a fan

The brouhaha over baptisms for the dead

Sometimes I think I’m pretty with it, and other times I just don’t get it. I don’t get all the commotion recently about the practice of baptisms for the dead in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I don’t understand why some outside the church are so against it, and I don’t understand

My sacrilegious daughter

I have a daughter who is 4 years old. She has been able to print a few things for a while now (including her name). The other day she brought something home from school with her name written on it. However it appeared to have much more written down than I expected: Who knew a

Strange sign to have in your house

Look at this bizarre sign I saw at a “dollar store” not too far from my house. What a strange thing to have up on your wall!

2011: The year Mormonism went mainstream

The National Post (in Canada) has a relatively positive article about the Church that was in the paper on December 26, 2011, and is also on their web site: Something happened to Mormons in 2011: They got popular, gained cachet and became, well, cool. Long thought of as outsiders, followers of the Church of Jesus

Christmas Subway Art

My wife is really into “subway” art right now. To me, that sounds like graffiti, but to her it means signs where there are a bunch of words that take up an entire page. It’s hard to describe, but if you don’t know what it looks like, do a Google Image Search for subway art
