I was going through some drafts that I had, and this one stuck out. Apparently 2 years ago we had a Canada-wide Stake Conference that was broadcast from Salt Lake City. Well, here we are 2 years later, and we have one this coming Sunday. I figured that I might as well post the notes that I typed up (but never posted) from the conference from 2 years ago, and then I’ll post the current notes next week. Obviously I paid a lot more attention to the Saturday broadcast than the Sunday one. I was still the bishop of the ward at that time, and the Saturday session essentially took the place of the local Priesthood Leadership session.

Saturday

Elder Pace

We can’t receive too much counsel

Melchizedek Priesthood quorums are lacking because they are failing to tap into the power of the quorum

our leaders try to prime the pump of revelation, but we need to receive the revelation from deity

Elder Ballard

Q) how we do combat pornography

A) we draw a line in our minds over which we will never step

stop, repent, quit, draw the line

make a resolve and commitment with the Lord that you will not step over into the devil’s playground

pornography will destroy your spirituality

if this is an issue, stop it today

be careful on other sites as well (like Facebook)

stay on the Lord’s side

Matthew 25 – do not be a goat

President Uchtdorf

he has lived more of his life in districts than in stakes

don’t wait to make an impact in the lives of our children

in today’s world, don’t trust the compass the world is offering

trust the Holy Ghost

spoke of compass ambiguity as he traveled in northern Canada (has been to Frobisher Lake and Goose Lake)

use the time you have in your calling

don’t dare say “if only I was the…”

1 Samuel 10 – the Lord will turn us into another man

there is no small calling in the Church

Sunday

111 downlink sites

10 + languages

my son asked if there was another episode

Elder Pace on both days called Elder Ballard by the name Russell M Ballard

President Uchtdorf was very fidgety

Truly a united nation of the Church

800+ missionaries

President Uchtdorf said that sometimes we have to look for something different to see the true identity. Bald Eagle, golf balls

The annual HP Quorum meeting of our stake is this coming Sunday. For some reason, our ward was asked to form a choir to sing a hymn. Now, if there was anything that would make me question the inspiration of our stake leaders, this has got to be it! We have about 20 HP in the ward, and my guess is that there will be 10 or less of us there. Out of those 10, I have no idea who are decent singers and who aren’t. We haven’t practiced, other than singing the hymn that was chosen as the opening hymn in Priesthood opening exercises. We’ll see how it goes…

Anyway, one of the reasons why I wanted to mention this, as it is a chance to plug the Interactive Music Player that the Church uses. It is awesome. I went on the site this evening to see if I could sing any of the parts (I can’t). You can play the whole song with all parts, or you can isolate a part. So if you want to learn the alto, you just play that part of the music. You can change the key and tempo as well. It is very cool!

A few random thoughts as the conference comes to an end:

I say this after each conference, and I think I will say it forever… I have a hard enough time staying awake for 10 hours, how do these men in their 70s and 80s?!?!

General Conference was fantastic. I always enjoy it, but there was something different this year. I’m not sure why, but I welcome it. I felt the Spirit through many of the talks, and loved the music.

We are so blessed to hear from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir regularly.

In between sessions on Sunday I watched The World Report. It’s always interesting. I like seeing some of the “behind the scenes” activities around the world.

I’m sure other goofy people have thought this before, but I noticed that Elder Malm offered the benediction of the Sunday Morning session. We have a dresser in one of our dressers from Ikea that is called Malm.

I can’t get over how great Elder Perry looks. He’s going to be 90 this year!

Before I die I hope to make it to Temple Square to hear the choir sing in person

More than half of births to American woman under 30 occur outside of marriage. Nearly half of marriages end in divorce.

Elder Ballard spoke powerfully to both male and female YSA about marriage

I’ve never heard of Elder Wilson before, but I really enjoyed his style (as well as substance)

It was a long, but enjoyable 10 hours. I’m grateful that we have prophets, seers, and revelators and other Church leaders who can help us feel the Spirit in this way.

Another thought from the High Priest Group lesson I mentioned the other day.

We learn in D&C 76 about the post-mortal life (specifically the three degrees of glory). Heavenly Father lives exclusively in the Celestial Kingdom. Jesus lives there, too, but will visit the Terrestrial Kingdom. The Holy Ghost will be felt in the Telestial Kingdom. Apparently beings will be able to visit down the line as well. Those in the Terrestrial Kingdom can visit those in the Telestial Kingdom, and beings in the Celestial Kingdom can visit the Terrestrial kingdom.

If you are interested, I found a couple of good quotes about this sort of visitation here.

The question asked in class was, “What is the purpose of that?” There is no chance to jump between worlds going up, so having someone come from a place you can’t go to is almost like another hell. I had never thought of it that way before. I thought about it a little more, and I’ve come to a different conclusion. There is a fantastic buffet restaurant in Ontario called Mandarin Chinese Buffet Restaurant. It is expensive, but the quality of food is fantastic. I don’t go very often, but whenever I get the chance, I love it, I’m glad I could go, and I look forward to going again. I never think how awful it is that I can’t go all the time. I’m wondering if that is how it will be when a being from a Kingdom above visits… it’ll be great, we’ll be happy we were able to feel that, and can’t wait for that being to come again.

Just my two cents…

Before General Conference starts, I always wonder how I’m going to make it through. By the time it is done, I can’t believe how fast it has gone by. There were several talks that I really enjoyed, and lots to think about it. Here are a few random notes/thoughts:

President Monson is a great story teller. The story he told Sunday morning was a simple story about leaving money in his pants pockets, but he made it last for 5 minutes and was suspenseful. He also seemed to be a little “wired”. It was fun to see.

My favourite talks were probably from Saturday afternoon. I really enjoyed Elder Andersen’s talk about having children. He said that we don’t have children because we have time, he said that is what we’ve been given time for. I also really enjoyed Elder Ardern. He spoke about time management. He said the scales of time need to be correctly balanced.

It was sad to see Elder Hales. I have no idea what is wrong with him, but I hope he is not suffering. President Monson’s remarks to “Bob” indicated he’s doing better. Let’s hope so!

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir was fantastic as always

Elder Cook’s Mormon connection to the Titanic was neat

Well, I guess that is it for this conference. Stay strong, and I’ll post again soon…

Well, here we go into the last session of conference. It has been good so far. I haven’t started to fall asleep even once

Between these two sessions on Sunday, we watched several of the Mormon Messages that the Church has put out. I highly recommend The Sting of the Scorpion and Watch Your Step. Both are very powerful!

President Henry B Eyring conducted

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang Arise, O God, and Shine

Elder F Michael Watson offered the invocation

Elder Russell M Nelson

spoke about his recent trip to Russia

temple covenants are sacred and powerful

we are children of the covenant

He is our God, we are His people

Elder Dallin H Oaks

What think ye of Christ?

When you consider all of the things the Saviour has done for us, don’t you have many reasons to come back to church?

Brother Matthew O Richardson

when I left my mission, my mission didn’t leave me

we need to be “real” in every area of our life

real life requires real learning which requires real teaching

The choir and congregation sang Now Let Us Rejoice

missionaries are a treasure to this great church

Elder Randall K Bennett

he shared a story about how he almost drowned as a child

that day he made a poor choice that almost permanently separate him from his family

you can’t make eternal decisions without eternal consequences

in our choices we make every day, are we choosing eternal life

we essentially only have two choices

are you choosing to be busy and apathetic that you don’t take time to study the words of Christ?

are you choosing to follow the prophets or the world?

your eternal destiny will not be an accident. It will be a choice

in His mercy, the God of heaven hears our prayers

Why would God concern himself with small things?

He loves us so much, what is important to us becomes important to him

it is contrary to the economy of heaven for God to do something for us we can do for ourselves

do not forget to ask the Lord to protect you and be with you

when we think we are too sinful to pray, that is like someone saying they are too sick to go to the doctor

Elder Quentin L Cook

something stirs within us when tragedy strikes innocent people.

why are righteous people not immune

The plan of salvation provides for eternal life

Cool story of missionaries cancelling trip on Titanic

have a spirit of gratitude in our hearts

we prosper when we have the spirit in our lives

some challenges give us experience and purify us and prepare us to meet God

God has enough lifeboats for everyone

The Sunday morning of Genetal Conference is awesome. I’m in the Eastern time zone, so conference doesn’t start until noon. We have all morning to relax. We went for a walk in the rain, watched part of Pocahontas, and then had the Music and the Spoken Word broadcast on.
How sad to see Elder Hales to look the way he did. I wonder what is wrong with him. I don’t mean to be disrespectful in speaking about him, but his face seemed kind of “puffy”, but spoke well. He had the same small oxygen tubes that came around the side of his nose that President Packer did. It appears to be a neat contraption that hooked up to his glasses.

He spoke of the atonement

To hope and trust in the Lord requires faith

To wait upon the Lord is planting the seed of faith

Sometimes I don’t receive an answer to prayers because the Lord knows I am not ready

shared a great analogy about a dot. You can draw an infinite number of lines through the point. That is the bible and different interpretations. Add a second dot, the Book of Mormon, and there is only one line between the dots.

I helped a woman in the ward move this morning, and I got back just before noon… just in time to setup the laptop and get everything working on the TV.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir opened the conference by singing The Morning Breaks

President Henry B Eyring conducted.

The choir sang With Songs of Praise

Elder Richard G Scott

We don’t need to be concerned about the truth of the scriptures as the Holy Ghost prompted the writers

The scriptures are like packets of light

To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship

Scriptures can provide a foundational support

The choir sang We Ever Pray for Thee

Sister Barbara Thompson

As we grow we have challenges that help us know we need divine help

“have ye inquired of the Lord?”

The way to receive personal revelation is quite clear; we need to have desire, not harden our hearts, ask in faith

A woman said that she didn’t keep a testimony during trials, the testimony kept her

Elder L Whitney Clayton

The gospel is filling the earth

The work is great and marvelous

The choir and congregation sang Redeemer of Israel

President Thomas S Monson

Time flies when we are busy

Recounted recent temple dedications

The building of temples continues uninterrupted

No church built facility is more important

Announced

Elder Jose L Alonso

The Saviour’s life was a life of service

There are many who are lost who do not know they are lost

President Boyd K Packer

NOTE: President Packer spoke from a chair (sitting down). He had very small oxygen tubes going around his no. They were hardly noticeable.

The youth of today are better than the youth of his day

The youth are being raised in enemy territory

You may feel uncertainty in your life

The family is the centre of the great plan of happiness

Perhaps the single greatest thing he’s learned from reading the Book of Mormon is that the Holly Ghost helps you feel spiritual things

If you are associating with people who will pull you away, use your agency and heed the promptings of the Holy Ghost

Moses knew of the grandeur of a worldly kingdom

Years later he spoke to God face to face

“I know that man is nothing”

Even though man is nothing, the worth of souls is great

the great Deceiver uses extremes to get to us

compared to God we are nothing, but to God we are everything

God loves the humble and meek

The Lord entrusts the fulness of his gospel to declare the gospel

No matter where you live, no matter how humble your circumstances, how meager your employment, you are not invisible to your Heavenly Father

Please understand that what you see and experience now is not what forever will be

The choir sang Press Forward, Saints
