I’m an IT guy, and the other day at work I was looking through some bounced messages, and came across one that was sent to someone who know longer works at the company. The subject line was “LDS Singles”, and this is the body of the message:

Weird! I don’t know if it is common in other places, but I’ve never seen this before. I’ve looked through thousands (maybe tens of thousands) of bounces over the years, and never seen a Mormon-related junk mail. Apparently spammers send spam, because it works… so is there interest in LDS singles?

This isn’t exactly a Mormon-related post, but it’s a good tip that might help you as you search for desktop wallpaper, clipart, icons, and more. The example I use is specifically Church-related.

I always tease my wife if she’s typing something up. She spends 5 minutes doing the typing and an hour on Google Images looking for good clipart to go with what she is typing. I’m sure many of you are the same. I recently heard about a “hidden” feature of Google Images that might help. It let’s you search for specific sizes of images. For a while now there has been a drop down list where you could choose between small, medium, large, and extra large. Well, along with your search term, if you put in imagesize:1024×768 (or whatever size you want, you’ll only see results of that size. This is particularly useful for finding desktop wallpaper.

For instance, doing a search for…

imagesize:1024×768 mormon temple

…brings up hundreds of pictures of temples that are that size.

Along with 1024×758, other common desktop wallpaper image sizes are 1680×1050 (widescreen), 1440×900 (laptop widescreen), 1280×1024, and 800×600. Also, icons are generally 32×32 or 64×64. Unfortunately, clipart could be any size, but you might try a small/medium size of 400×400 or 400×300 and see what you get. Of course, just searching for mormon clipart does bring up a fair number of results on its own.

I’m a computer guy by profession. I generally feel that you can never have too much information. I love the Church, so if you mix those things together, I feel that I just can’t get enough information about the Church, or what is going on with the Church. I don’t subscribe to every blog out there, as some of them are just not my style. Here is a list of the ones that I do follow:

There are some here that are not active anymore, and I need to clean those up. As I mentioned before, NothingWavering.org has allowed me to eliminate individual blogs. That site provides a feed that collects the feeds from many other sites (including this one).

You’ll see that I have several Google Alerts as well. It’s interesting to read about the Church in the news in various parts of the world. I’m also a fan/student of Church history, so I like to follow a couple of phrases that might have some shared information with our “cousins”.

If you are interested, you can download an OPML file of these feeds here.

You can also find individual links here (remember, some of the links are old):

I’ve had this domain for quite some time, and I had anticipated that I’d be able to blog about quite a bit. However, since I run several other sites, I just haven’t made time for Mormonopia. This year I resolved to change that. To start with, I’m trying to post something every Monday through Friday. This has been challenging, but fun.

One of the main things I’m working on is my list of Official web sites of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As I come across new sites or sub-domains, I post about them and add them to the list. If you are aware of some, please let me know.

Many months ago I applied to be part of NothingWavering.org. This is a web site that aggregates many LDS blogs (or non-Church related blogs by members) into one place. I used to subscribe to lots of different LDS-related blogs, but I’ve since been able to remove half of them and just subscribe to one of the feeds at NothingWavering.org. It’s quite nice.

If you have never visited NothingWavering.org, check it out:

Anyway, I got an email on Thursday telling me that my site was been accepted. That’s great news, but now the pressure’s on to post regularly, and to post good content. I’ll do my best!

You may have heard that Google has added photos that were previously published by Life magazine. The announcement was as follows:

Only a very small percentage of these images have ever been published. The rest have been sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. We’re digitizing them so that everyone can easily experience these fascinating moments in time. Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few months, we will be adding the entire LIFE archive — about 10 million photos.

I hadn’t thought about this in a “church” sense at all, until I saw a post on the LDS Tech web site. The person had search for Mormon and come up with some interesting pictures. I then also search for Salt Lake City, latter-day, and joseph smith and found some other interesting images.

Here is the basic description:

Very timely for the current (and worsening) global financial crisis, MormonBudget is a collection of resources with an LDS perspective on managing personal and family finances. It features a detailed commentary on what the Book of Mormon teaches about money management and has a unique online budgeting tool called LDS Money Manager which helps you plan to live within your means and be prepared for you and your family’s future.

There are lots of great sites out there that provide tools for members in their callings. Unfortunately, the Church has not officially recognized any of them. Until now, that is…

The LDS Tech recently announced the winner of their inaugural LDS Tech Awards (“the purpose is to publicly and formally celebrate the technical achievements of those who are sharing their skills with the Church.”. The winner in 2008 was ReturnAndReport.org:

Return and Report.org is a tool that assists Relief Society, Elders Quorum and High Priest Group Leaders with their Home or Visiting teaching responsibilities. The tool has two tiers. The first tier provides a scheduled email reminder to each individual teacher with a personalized message from their leaders. The second tier adds the ability for the teachers to click on a link and report on their efforts. Additionally, the second tier allows teachers to send comments to their leaders or companions or even request an interview with their leaders. This gives the leaders key visibility regarding who has been visited and when. This tool frees up leaders and gives them the necessary information to focus on the needs of the individuals they are responsible for.

I haven’t tried it, but it looks impressive.
