Back after a long absence

I knew it had been a while since I posted, but when I checked this morning, it has been over 2 months. Yikes! I have a bunch of stuff that I want to get posted, so I’ll try to get back to a regular schedule. Over the last couple of months I’ve changed callings, so I’ll have more to share with you about that as well.

A quick Halloween joke

I’m not a big Halloween fan, but my kids love it. I’d much rather just skip over it and get right to Christmas.

In honour of my kids, here is a quick church-related Halloween joke:

Why don’t skeletons play church music?

They’re missing their organs!

🙂

General Conference this weekend

Sorry for the slow posting over the past week or two. I’ve been a little under the weather, and life has gotten hectic. Things are settling down now, and I’m feeling better, so I’ll be back to regular posting. I have a couple of little things to post this week, and then of course I’ll be posting my notes from General Conference. If you haven’t seen my General Conference posts before, I put up 7 postings for each conference. I put up a few thoughts beforehand, I post about each of the 5 sessions, and then some closing thoughts. You can check out my first posting from April conference to see how it works.

Slow posting this week

Sorry for the slow posting this week. The time that I would normally spend on the blog has been spent listening to the Terryl Givens podcast from Mormon Stories. I don’t listen to many of the Mormon Stories podcasts, but this one is definitely worth your time. There are 5 sections, so it takes about 5 hours to get through, but they are fantastic!

Back to regular posting this week

As I mentioned in my previous post, we bought a house and have been busy moving. Things are finally getting under control (it took a bit longer than expected), so I will be back to regular posting this week.

Slow posting for a week or so

Over the last month or two I’ve kept up a pretty good pace of posting 3 times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Unfortunately, I won’t be able to keep that pace for the next week or two. I am in the process of moving, so things are pretty busy around here. Hopefully I’ll be back posting again very soon. Thanks for your patience!

“It’s in you to give”

The slogan for Canadian Blood Services is “It’s in you to give”. I started to donate blood about 4 years ago. My sister was going and I figured I’d go along with her. I’ve been every 56 days ever since.

The former bishop of another ward in the area has been giving blood for a long, long time. He has arranged blood drives, and the church has even been used once or twice I think. The church shows up on the “Partners for Life” board. I assume it has to do with the total amount of blood units donated, and not on any financial donation, but I don’t know for sure.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

This isn’t really Church related, but I couldn’t resist sharing it. My 4-year-old son is in Jr Kindergarten and there is currently a female student teacher working with his regular teacher. One of the YSA at Church is going to the local university to become a teacher, and we tease my 6-year-old son that she is his girlfriend (he really likes her). Anyway, my 4-year-old son and I were in the car alone the other day going to get something, and I was asking him about school and his student teacher. He spoke positively about her, and I asked if she was pretty (thinking I would tease him about a “girlfriend”, too), and he said, “No, she doesn’t wear lipstick”. I laughed out loud and asked him if a girl could only be pretty if she wore lipstick. He avoided that question, but did say that girls only wear lipstick to Church. I didn’t pursue it further, but it certainly made me wonder… do all females wear lipstick to Church? Do all the females in our ward wear lipstick? If so, does he think they are all pretty? Perhaps he is just thinking of his Mommy. My wife hardly ever wears make-up, but she does put some on for Church on Sunday. I guess since Mommy wears lipstick on Sunday, that’s what makes a girl pretty. Funny stuff!

Juvenile Instructor series of postings

I was visiting with an elderly couple in our ward recently and noticed an old Juvenile Instructor lying on one of their tables. I picked it up and started to leaf through it. I commented to them that I liked looking through the old magazines. The doctrine has essentially remained the same but the way it is presented is quite different (this is as much a generational thing as it is a church thing). The woman went off and came back with a whole stake of them. I borrowed a dozen or so of them and she says she has lots more. So gradually over the coming weeks/months, I’ll post some of the more interesting things I saw.

Official web sites of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints v2

One of the most popular pages on this site is the posting a I did a while ago on the Official Web sites of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (note: this links to the old version). Since then, I’ve collected new links and have created a page that is linked to on every other page on the site. At the top of the site is a link called Official Web sites of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This is the new page. I will try to keep it up-to-date and post any changes to the blog.

For your information, as of now there are 25 different web sites or sections of web sites linked to.

If you know of any other sites that should be mentioned, please let me know…
