185th Annual General Conference – Sunday Afternoon General Session

Here we go on the last session. It has been good so far, and there have definitely been several talks that really touched me. Obviously we’ll get to hear from Elder Bednar.

President Henry B Eyring conducted

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang Praise the Lord with Heart and Voice

Elder Jörg Klebingat offered the invocation

The choir sang Our God is a God of Love

Elder D Todd Christofferson

  • Why does God use a Church to carry out his work?
  • A community of saints can sustain one another on the strait and narrow path
  • We strive to help one another come to the knowledge of the son of God
  • We are prone to excuse and rationalize our faults
  • The Church has leaders who can reprove betimes with sharpness, after showing for an increase in love
  • We are not converted to the Church, but to Christ and His gospel
  • The Church was the family in the beginning. Today, they support one another
  • Together in the Church our ability to care for the poor and needy is broadened

Brother Devin G Durrant

  • By profession, he is an investor. He is also a disciple of Christ
  • He works by sound financial principles and lives by sound spiritual principles
  • Save money each week
  • Ponderize one verse each verse
  • Ponderize means 80% extended pondering, 20% memorization

Elder Von G Keetch

  • Told a story about some surfers wanting to surf some big waves
  • A barrier was stopping them, but an old local surfer helped them see the sharks in the distance
  • The commandments are sometimes viewed as barriers
  • Those barriers protect us from spiritual predators

Sister Carole M Stephens

  • Told story about taking her grand-daughter out and she didn’t want to wear her seatbelt
  • We can choose to see commandments as limitations
  • As we seek for greater understanding, we will see that His laws are a manifestation of His love for us

The choir and congregation sang Rejoice, the Lord Is King

Elder Allen D Haynie

  • It doesn’t matter how far into the pit we have sunk
  • What does matter is that Jesus Christ suffered so he knows how to succor us
  • He was willing to condescend
  • Repentance is real and it works
  • The Saviour’s atonement leaves not tracks or traces. What it heals, it heals. It’s fixed

Elder Kim B Clark

  • We need greater spiritual power and eyes to see more clearly
  • We do not have to be perfect, but we need to be good and getting better
  • Life may get hard, confusing and discouraging
  • Through the companionship HG, the light of Christ’s gospel will cut through the confusion, the pain and the darkness.
  • We need eyes to see and ears to hear

Elder Koichi Aoyagi

  • Experienced earthquake in Tokyo
  • Why do we face such trials?
  • Was in a car accident that caused him pain for 10 years. Why did he have to suffer?
  • We are here on earth to go through trials
  • We leave the rest up to the Lord
  • When we face trials, we need to turn to God
  • He could have died in his accident. He survived, and his suffering has been for his learning and growth.

The choir sang Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel

Elder David A. Bednar

  • Why is it wonderful we have older men leading the Church?
  • When you can’t do what you used to be able to do, you do what matters most
  • He shared lots of teachings of the various apostles who he has served and who have passed away to demonstrate how wise they are

The choir sang Love One Another

Elder Scott D Whiting offered the benediction

  • Our scriptures are full of references to the Savior
  • The mercy and grace of Chris is available to all
  • No matter how large the Church becomes, the true success of the Gospel will be measured by the spiritual strength of its individual members

Elder Lynn G Robbins

  • Which way do you face?
  • We should not flip/reverse the first two great commandments
  • We should not try to please others instead of pleasing God
  • If we are facing the wrong way, we can turn around
  • Lowering our standards to meet the world is apostacy

  • If people haven’t experienced things, received the more complete light of truth, then they don’t believe new truth
  • As humans we believe we are right, even when we are wrong
  • We can know truth for ourselves
  • Read the scriptures, ponder, and be grateful
  • Ask Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ to manifest the truth of the Church unto you
  • Put the Gospel and Church teachings to the test in your life

184th Annual General Conference – Sunday Afternoon General Session

I can’t believe that conference is almost over. We’re just about to start the last session. In between these two Sunday sessions we watched Angels in the Outfield. It probably isn’t the typical movie that we would watch on a Sunday, but my wife and I both have fond memories of it from when we were dating, and hey, it has an “angel” in it, so it can’t be that bad. All of my kids said it was awesome :-)

As the session is about to start, I see that President Packer is there for the first time. I presume we will hear him speak. We also need to \hear from Elder Christofferson and Elder Perry.

President Dieter F Uchtdorf conducted

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang Sweet Is the Work

The invocation was offered by Bishop Dean M Davies

2012 Canada-wide Stake Conference

On Sunday, May 27, 2012 we had what appears to be a bi-annual Canada-wide Stake Conference. The Saturday portion of Stake Conference was still a local event, but the Sunday morning session was broadcast from one of the studios at the Conference Centre.

In the morning while still at home, my 9-year-old son offered our family prayer, and he prayed that the speakers at the conference wouldn’t be nervous speaking in front of a lot of people. Cool!

Elder William R Walker conducted and President Boyd K Packer presided. They were accompanied by D Todd Christofferson and Sister Carole M Stephens.

A couple of days before the conference I asked my wife which of Elder Ballard or President Monson would be speaking. She said Elder Ballard for sure, but thought both of them would be there, seeing as they have such a connection to Canada. Well, neither of them was there.

Apparently there was something like 47 stakes and 3 districts participating in the conference.

The opening and closing of the conference were done locally.

Here are my notes from the meeting:

Elder William R Walker

  • We need to point our children to the temple
  • In 1912 there were 7,000 members in Canada, most of them from Southern Alberta
  • The Alberta Temple was announced in October 1912 and the ground-breaking ceremony was on July 27, 1913 by Joseph F Smith
  • The temple was dedicated by Heber J Grant in August 1923
  • There are now temples in Cardston, Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Calgary will be open soon, and Winnipeg has been announced
  • There will soon be 9 temples in Canada, the same number of temples that were in all the Church in 1955
  • The temple should be the great symbol of our membership

Sister Carole M Stevens

  • We need to prepare our children for the evil world ahead of them
  • We need to act with faith, not fear
  • Don’t waste time with “I wish I would have…” Start today!

The intermediate/congregational hymn was “How Firm a Foundation

Elder D Todd Christofferson

  • He recounted his connection to Canada
  • Service is the very fiber of which an exalted life is made
  • Why must we be commanded to serve one another?
  • Even though President Monson can’t reach everyone, he still does what he can
  • We are a church of service
  • The most crucial services is in our own home
  • The Savior is the great Exemplar of service

President Boyd K Packer
Note: President Packer did NOT sound good. He was hard to understand, and didn’t seem to be able to remember things. He would try to speak without looking at his notes, but then had to refer back to them

  • He spoke of his experiences of Canada
  • He was President of the New England Mission, and that involved trips to Eastern Canada
  • We have to remember the Gospel is true
  • When we get that feeling in our hearts, we know what we need to know
  • It’s not an easy thing to be a member, but it is easier than anything else if we do what is right
  • Never be ashamed of the Church
  • He blessed us to “take faith”

182nd Annual General Conference – Sunday Morning General Session

The Sunday morning of General Conference is the best! I’m in the Eastern time zone, so General Conference starts at noon. We got up late, had a nice breakfast, and then relaxed for the rest of the morning. Nice!

The family is gathered together now, and we’ll watch the session together. The other sessions we ask the kids to watch the first half hour, but they watch the entire Sunday morning session with us.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang Come, Ye Children of the Lord (I love this hymn)

President Henry B Eyring conducted

The choir sang Praise to the Lord, the Almighty (my wife loves this hymn… she attended a meeting where she first felt that the Church was true and this song was sung at the meeting, so it has a special place in her heart)

Elder Brent H Nielson offered the invocation

The choir sang Teach Me to Walk in the Light (a beautiful arrangement)

President Dieter F Uchtdorf

  • everyone has been affected by resentment

  • the Relief Society increases faith
  • the Relief Society strengthen families and homes
  • the Relief Society seeks those in need
  • faith, family, and relief have come to express the vision of prophets for the sisters of the Church
  • Relief Society is not a program, it is part of the Church
  • there is no other organization to match the Relief Society

Elder D Todd Christofferson

  • we’ve seen a growing interest in the Church as of late
  • there is still some confusion with our doctrine and how it is established
  • establishing the doctrine of Christ is not done through scholarship
  • the Lord communicates with his servants by personal visits, but messengers, by voice, and by feeling
  • the prophet is a prophet only when acting as such
  • the fundamental principles of our religion are the testimonies of the prophets and apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ

The choir sang Let Us Oft Speak Kind Words

President Thomas S Monson

  • he will speak of eternal truths
  • we are so busy, and often are worried about the trivial things of life
  • we get caught up in the race of life

  • “To be or not to be” is actually a very good question
  • “What manner of men ought ye to be?”
  • to be and to do are inseparable
  • people often have “to do” lists, not “to be” lists
  • discipline involves patience
  • teach your children well
  • we need to compliment their “be” and “do”

Elder Benjamin De Hoyos

  • loves being with the saints
  • humble members who are dedicated become saints
  • the saints come to know the Savior through their trials

Elder C Scott Grow (I love his name)

  • his brother recently died
  • shared some information about his brother who had fallen away, and came back
  • the Savior’s atonement is available for each of us, always
  • as we repent, the Savior removes the guilt

Elder Jeffrey R Holland

  • Before leaving Nauvoo, President Young had a dream of the Salt Lake Valley
  • reflect on the unique phenomenon that General Conference is
  • we testify to every nation, kindred, tongue and people, that God not only lives, but also speaks
  • with rare exception, no one is given a topic
  • the general authorities and officers of the church are mortal messengers with angelic messages
  • the church is not a fast food outlet; we can’t always have it our way
  • if you teach by the Spirit and listen by the Spirit, one of the speakers will touch on your circumstances and send a personal prophetic epistle just to you
  • one way or another God will have His voice heard

President Thomas S Monson

  • expressed appreciation for those who participated in the conference
  • expressed gratitude for his counselors, the Twelve, and the Seventy
  • may we be examples of honesty and integrity
  • none of us can fully comprehend what Christ did for us

The choir sang More Holiness Give Me

Elder Kent D Watson offered the benediction
