187th Annual General Conference – Sunday Afternoon General Session

Between sessions, I napped for a bit while my kids watched Moana in the background. We’re all gathered around now for the last session of conference. It looks like President Thomas S Monson is not in attendance for this final session.

President Dieter F Uchtdorf conducted

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang Come, Rejoice

The invocation was offered by Elder Eduardo Gaverret

The choir sang More Holiness Give Me

Elder D Todd Christofferson

  • We should have a desire to warn others, to share the gospel with our neighbour
  • Parents need to warn their children
  • In a moral system, life is based on who is included and not included
  • It is a culture of sensitivity and panic
  • The modern shame culture is supposed to include everyone, but is unmerciful to those who disagree
  • As watchmen and disciples, we cannot be neutral

Elder Joaquin E Costa

  • Things he learned as he met with the missionaries
    • Meet with the missionaries
    • Attend Church
    • Read the Book of Mormon and pray about it
    • Experience repentance
  • If you are investigating or a friend of the Church, you are very close. We invite you to go and be baptized

Elder S Mark Palmer

  • How can we be filled with Christ-like love so we can help others to change
  • As we learn to see others as the Lord see them, a love for them will grow and so will our desire to help them
  • No teaching or learning will ever occur when done in frustration or anger
  • Love should never be withdrawn when someone fails to live up to our expectation
  • Because He loves us, the Lord expects much from us

The choir and congregation sang The Iron Rod

Elder Gary E Stevenson

  • How does the Holy Ghost help you?
  • The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead
  • The Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit
  • The Gift of the Holy Ghost comes by the laying on of hands
  • He told the story about how missionaries were safe after the Fukushima Japan earthquake because a leader was prompted to have the missionaries attend a meeting inland

Elder C Scott Grow

  • We can begin to know God through prayer
  • As you read the scriptures, you will hear his voice
  • We do the will of the Father by keeping our covenants and keeping
  • As we strive to become like God, he can make of us more than we can make of ourselves

Elder Benjamín De Hoyos

  • We can be a light or ensign to other people
  • We can be an ensign by doing family history work
  • We can be an ensign by teaching in the Savior’s way
  • We can be an ensign as we keep the Sabbath holy

The choir sang Keep the Commandments

Elder Quentin L Cook

  • Spiritual guidance is received when needed and according to the Lord’s time
  • The Urim and Thummim and the seer stones may have been like training wheels that were only necessary until Joseph had the confidence to do it himself
  • Weekly participation in weekly Sacrament Meeting has spiritual ramifications we do not understand
  • Faith is a principle of power
  • What are the blessings of faith? Our sins are forgiven, we have communion with the Holy Spirit, salvation comes, we receive strength according to our faith, we can enter into His rest, prayers are answered, God can do miracles
  • Our faith in Jesus Christ is the eseential foundation for our salvation

The choir sang How Firm a Foundation

I almost didn’t make it home from work on time. I have to cross a canal on the way home, and there is a website where you can check when the bridge will be up. I left work and it was supposed to be up in about an hour. Then 30 minutes later when I got there the bridge was up. Frustrating!

Regardless, as a family we are gathered in our family room watching the broadcast.

President Dieter F Uchtdorf conducted

A choir made up of missionaries from the Provo Missionary Training Center sang Joseph Smith’s First Prayer (it was beautiful!)

The invocation was offered by Elder Daniel L Johnson

President Henry B Eyring did the sustaining of Church officers. As is usual now, there were those who opposed during the sustaining of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve. There were a few General Authority Seventies released (Daniel L. Johnson, Jairo Mazzagardi, Kent F. Richards and Francisco J. Viñas) but no new ones called. There was also one Area Seventy released and two sustained. There were no other changes.

The choir sang Baptism

Elder Quentin L Cook

  • Eternal life is the greatest gift from God
  • There are obstacles that can stop of us from receiving that gift

Elder Gary E Stevenson

  • Told story of Mary Rollins
  • No one is ever too young to gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon
  • He read recently that teenagers spend 7 hours a day looking at screens
  • He asked that they reduce some of that time and spend it reading the Book of Mormon

The choir and congregation sang Called to Serve

Elder D Todd Christofferson

  • The bible tells us that God is love
  • The scriptures use terms other than “unconditional” to describe love
  • What matters is how we respond to His love
  • God will always love us, but He cannot save us in our sins
  • As we trust, not resist, our divine Teacher, we will learn from Him

Elder W Mark Bassett

  • He and his brother had replica gold plates when they were kids
  • They tried really hard to get at the “sealed” portion
  • They spent all their time trying to read something hidden when they
  • We need to focus on the things that matter
  • Keeping our life in harmony with God will allow Him to guide us in our spiritual development

Elder Kazuhiko Yamashita

  • We need to be ambitious for Christ
  • Missionaries are a great example of focus and faith
  • He told a story about a missionary who served in his mission (when he was president) and his challenges with a prosthetic leg

The choir sang I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go

Elder Dallin H Oaks

  • We need to share the gospel with everyone
  • We have a lot of modern technology that helps us
  • Are we using them to maximum effect?
  • Ideas that will work everywhere
  • We can all pray for desire to help in this work
  • We can keep the commandments ourselves
  • Faithful members are the most persuasive and they always have His spirit with them
  • We can pray for inspiration on what we can do in our individual circumstances to share the gospel with others
  • Invite people to learn about the gospel and about Jesus Christ, not just to learn about our Church

The choir sang Hope of Israel

The benediction was offered by Elder Allen D Haynie

I think that conference Sunday are my two favourite Sundays in the year. I haven’t lived in an area where I go to Church in the afternoon, so for us to have the morning available is a real treat.
