186th_semiannual_general_conference_header-450x250

I finally got around to watching the General Women’s Session. It was exceptional.

Sister Linda K Burton conducted

The choir made up of Young Women from stakes in Ogden, Huntsville, and Morgan Utah sang Arise, O Glorious Zion

The invocation was offered by Denise P Lindberg

The choir sang If I Listen with My Heart

Sister Jean B Bingham

  • Since last conference much charitable work has been done with refugees
  • You must have charity to be saved
  • Be generous in your thoughts and words
  • We look at others with incomplete or inaccurate views
  • A compliment or smile can be like a wind in our sails
  • Choose to say what is positive
  • Don’t compare ourselves to others
  • The great beauty is the reality of eternal progression
  • Will we commit to bless others in Jesus’ name?

Sister Carole M Stephens

  • We need to understand the doctrine of Christ
  • She has met people who are desperate for help but who won’t turn to the One (Christ)
  • All of us need the same infinite atonement
  • He is might to save
  • Helps i not found in screete. It is found in the Light of CHrist
  • She told story of a YW named Josie who suffers from bipolar disorder who felt the power of the atonement. As her mother said she wished she could take the pain away, Josie said, “You don’t have to, someone already has”
  • You don’t have to carry burdens and pains alone

Sister Bonnie L Oscarson

  • We live in perilous times
  • Moroni asked “Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ?
  • We are at risk of being led astray by false teachings
  • We live in perilous times, but they are also the fulness of times
  • 3 foundational areas of a strong testimony include Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father are central, the need for a restoration, and to study and understand temple ordinances
  • many have questions, but there are answers
  • we are afraid to cause offense, so we fail to teach the correct doctrine
  • “All women need to see themselves as essential participants in the work of the priesthood. Women in this Church are presidents, counselors, teachers, members of councils, sisters, and mothers, and the kingdom of God cannot function unless we rise up and fulfill our duties with faith. Sometimes we just need to have a greater vision of what is possible.”
  • Be bold and straightforward as we teach

The choir sang How Firm a Foundation

President Dieter F Uchtdorf

  • President Monson loves you sisters
  • He summarized the woman of influence in his life
  • This same thing is repeated millions of times across the Church
  • Faith is a conviction that moves us to action
  • Faith confuses non-believers
  • There are more ways to see than with your eyes
  • When trying to help others, telling them to try harder may not be the best way
  • The better advice is to do it differently
  • No matter how much faith we have, we cannot violate others agency
  • Faith cannot force our will upon God’s
  • The purpose of faith is not to change God’s will, but to empower us to act on God’s will
  • He told the store of how the missionaries found his wife Harriett and her family. They were on the top floor of the building, and the last door.
  • God rewards those who seek Him, but He is usually not behind the first door
  • Continue in faith until the fourth floor, last door

The choir and congregation sang I Know That My Redeemer Lives

The benediction was offered by Bonnie H Cordon

The family is gathered together and we are set to get started. Since my oldest is now 12, he is going to watch all of the sessions with us. The younger two will watch half an hour of each session, all of Sunday morning, and then President Monson’s conclusion on Sunday afternoon.

Let’s get going…

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang The Morning Breaks

Sister Bonnie L Oscarson offered the invocation

President Thomas S Monson

  • 90-year anniversary of radio broadcast
  • 65-year anniversary of tv broadcast
  • 1 new temple dedicated (Florida Fort Lauderdale) by President Uchtdorf
  • 1 temple rededicated (Utah Ogden) by President Monson
  • New Phoenix temple will be dedicated next month
  • In 2015 there will be 5 temples dedicated or rededicated, with more possible depending on how things go
  • When all previously announced are done there will be  170 operating temples
  • No new temples to announce
  • The Church continues to grow
  • Over 88,000 missionaries serving

The choir sang Beautiful Zion, Built Above

President Boyd K Packer (he looked good, but seemed to have a hard time speaking)

  • Told story about giving Oxford a copy of the scriptures, and pointing out the 18 pages about Christ in the Topical Guide
  • Our scriptures are full of references to the Savior
  • The mercy and grace of Chris is available to all
  • No matter how large the Church becomes, the true success of the Gospel will be measured by the spiritual strength of its individual members

Elder Lynn G Robbins

  • Which way do you face?
  • We should not flip/reverse the first two great commandments
  • We should not try to please others instead of pleasing God
  • If we are facing the wrong way, we can turn around
  • Lowering our standards to meet the world is apostacy

Sister Cheryl A Esplin

  • What do you wish you had known when you were younger?
  • I wish I had understood the significance of the Sacrament
  • Spoke all about the Sacrament

The choir and congregation sang Guide Us, O Thou Great Jehovah

Elder Chi Hong Wong (spoke in Cantonese)

  • Reach out and rescue
  • He compared the story of the man with palsy being lowered through the roof to our efforts to rescuing
  • There are sometimes obstacles, but we can’t give up
  • With so many missionaries in our units, we need to get them involved
  • Our combined faith can help others

Elder D Todd Christofferson

  • We see God’s love through His commandments
  • The Gospel opens the path to what we may become
  • Christ died not to save indiscriminately, but to offer repentance
  • Freedom comes not from resisting it, but from applying it

The choir sang If I Listen With My Heart

President Dieter F Uchtdorf

  • A century ago, we thought we were alone in the universe, that the Milky Way was the only galaxy
  • With greater light, we have been introduced to glorious vistas we had never before imagined
  • If people haven’t experienced things, received the more complete light of truth, then they don’t believe new truth
  • As humans we believe we are right, even when we are wrong
  • We can know truth for ourselves
  • Read the scriptures, ponder, and be grateful
  • Ask Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ to manifest the truth of the Church unto you
  • Put the Gospel and Church teachings to the test in your life
  • Spiritual truth will fill your heart

The choir sang From All That Dwell below the Skies

The benediction was offered by Bradley D Foster
