187th Annual General Conference – Sunday Afternoon General Session

Between sessions, I napped for a bit while my kids watched Moana in the background. We’re all gathered around now for the last session of conference. It looks like President Thomas S Monson is not in attendance for this final session.

  • We should have a desire to warn others, to share the gospel with our neighbour
  • Parents need to warn their children
  • In a moral system, life is based on who is included and not included

  • As we strive to become like God, he can make of us more than we can make of ourselves

Elder Benjamín De Hoyos

  • We can be a light or ensign to other people
  • We can be an ensign by doing family history work
  • We can be an ensign by teaching in the Savior’s way
  • We can be an ensign as we keep the Sabbath holy

The choir sang Keep the Commandments

Elder Quentin L Cook

  • Spiritual guidance is received when needed and according to the Lord’s time
  • The Urim and Thummim and the seer stones may have been like training wheels that were only necessary until Joseph had the confidence to do it himself
  • Weekly participation in weekly Sacrament Meeting has spiritual ramifications we do not understand
  • Faith is a principle of power
  • What are the blessings of faith? Our sins are forgiven, we have communion with the Holy Spirit, salvation comes, we receive strength according to our faith, we can enter into His rest, prayers are answered, God can do miracles
  • Our faith in Jesus Christ is the eseential foundation for our salvation

The choir sang How Firm a Foundation

184th Annual General Conference – Sunday Afternoon General Session

184th_annual_gc_header

I can’t believe that conference is almost over. We’re just about to start the last session. In between these two Sunday sessions we watched Angels in the Outfield. It probably isn’t the typical movie that we would watch on a Sunday, but my wife and I both have fond memories of it from when we were dating, and hey, it has an “angel” in it, so it can’t be that bad. All of my kids said it was awesome 🙂

As the session is about to start, I see that President Packer is there for the first time. I presume we will hear him speak. We also need to \hear from Elder Christofferson and Elder Perry.

President Dieter F Uchtdorf conducted

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang Sweet Is the Work

The invocation was offered by Bishop Dean M Davies

The choir sang I Stand All Amazed

President Boyd K Packer **NOTE: President Packer had a very hard time speaking. A couple of times he paused and seemed to be trying to keep in a cough (or maybe something worse)

  • God lives
  • He knows the Holy Ghost is real
  • Arms empty will be filled and hearts now hurting will be healed

Elder William R Walker

  • Do not forget the experiences you have

Elder L Tom Perry

  • Shared a story of how he used to speak with his grandfather after taking care of the lawns
  • He compared the way horses are trained to the way we learn obedience
  • We need to have absolute faith in the driver of the team, Jesus Christ
  • Obedience is not just passive
  • Obedience is an emblem of our faith

The choir and congregation sang Hark, All Ye Nations!

Elder Lawrence E Corbridge

  • Recounted the First Vision
  • Opposition, criticism & antagonism are companions to the truth

Elder Michael John U Teh

  • Spoke about the Philippines Typhoon
  • The material we work to acquire can quickly not matter

  • Lay up treasures in heaven

  • We invite all to study the works and fruits of this Church
  • We can all receive revelation if we ask in faith

Elder D Todd Christofferson

  • Recounted the resurrection of Jesus
  • The Savior makes all things right
  • He restores life
  • He will come again and reign personally on the earth
  • In due course, all will know, indeed every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ

President Thomas S Monson

  • May we resolve to do better
  • May we be kind and loving who do not share our beliefs
  • May we ever follow His example
  • May heaven’s blessing be with each of us

The choir sang Come, Let Us Anew

The benediction was offered by Elder Benjamín De Hoyos

180th Semiannual General Conference – Priesthood Session

As indicated in the write-up for the Saturday afternoon session, I watched that one at home. I had to be at the Church by 6:15 pm (Eastern time), so I left about halfway through Elder Scott’s address and picked up my father. We both had to be at the YM sub-sational which started at 7:00 PM (I had a meeting before then).

The sub-sational was great, with around 15 YM attending with their fathers. Include the YM leaders, the missionaries and the bishopric, and we probably had 30 people there. Good times for sure!

My father has always taken me out after the Priesthood Session of conference, and that tradition continues. Even after eating a couple of subs, we went out afterward to Boston Pizza and had some chicken wings and cactus cut potatoes. As to me as I dropped him off at home, “Good conversation, good company.” Thanks Dad!

  • he told a story about growing up on the “Arabian peninsula” and got stung by a scorpion
  • he knew he was supposed to wear shoes, but didn’t
  • disregarding what we know to be right brings

Elder Juan A Uceda

  • story of a man and his daughter, the man yelled at his daughter because she didn’t want to read the scriptures with his family
  • after a short time both the daughter and father said they were sorry
  • our home has to be a place where the Spirit can dwell
  • the home is next to the temple in sacredness

The choir and congregation sang High on the Mountain Top

President Dieter F Uchtdorf

  • remembers President Ezra Taft Benson’s talk on Pride from 1989
  • there is a difference between being proud of something and being prideful
  • pride is self-elevation
  • pride is a gateway sin
  • there is a lot of pride in sports
  • in life, we all wear the same jersey
  • we are to encourage all people
  • we can be grateful, but when we obsess or focus on those things, that is when the trouble begins
  • pride is a switch that turns off priesthood power
  • humility is a switch that turns on priesthood power
  • there are so many people in need we could be thinking about other than ourselves

President Henry B Eyring

  • the power of a holder of the priesthood is magnified by the Holy Ghost
  • we should pray for the Holy Ghost in our service
  • pondering is the thinking and praying after reading and studying

President Thomas S Monson

  • the 3 R’s of choice
    • right of choice
    • responsibility of choice

178th Semiannual General Conference – Saturday Morning Session

My postings from the April General Conference sessions brought a lot of visitors (although no comments), so I figured I’d do the same this time. I already take notes anyway and include them in my journal, so this is just an extension of that.

  • When I first got to the church, there was only 1 person sitting in the chapel. Within a few minutes, there were about 55 people there (not a bad turnout)
  • President Monson conducted. He had a typical dark conservative suit on. This might not be note-worthy, but given that he wore a very light coloured suit at the RS broadcast (that was the first thing my wife told me when she got home that night), I wondered what he would wear.
  • President Thomas S. Monson
    • during the last 6 months they have dedicated 3 more temples
    • he recounted the cultural celebrations
    • 5 new temples announced to be built in the greater Kansas City area; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Calgary Alberta, Canada; Córdoba, Argentina; and Rome, Italy
    • he asked us to pray for areas of the world to be opened
  • Elder L. Tom Perry * might be used as a 4th Sunday lesson *
    • endure
    • be positive and optimistic
    • “the best is yet to be”
    • he shared the story of Henry David Thoreau and his life on Walden Pond
    • Thoreau said that we only needed 4 things: food, clothing, shelter, fuel
    • we need a simplified lifestyle
    • Food – read from the Word of Wisdom
    • Clothing – simple & modes; dress and grooming sends message to others; casual dress brings casual manners
    • Shelter – live within our needs; stay out of debt; save for a rainy day
    • Fuel – spiritual fuel
  • Sister Silvia H. Allred
    • the Lord’s church has responsibility to preach the gospel
    • she was taught when she was 14
    • missionary work is in the life blood of the church
    • how can I assist or participate?
1)have a clear understanding that God loves all his children
      2) our message is the most important gift that we have to give
    • every member can help
    • be a good neighbour
    • be specific in your efforts
  • Elder Neil L. Anderson
    • “you don’t know everything, but you know enough”
    • we have moments of spiritual power, as we do, we have personal storage that we can go to in moments of doubt
    • faith is not just a feeling, it is a choice/decision (my favourite line of the session)
    • questions and doubts are normal
    • “be not afraid, only believe”
  • Elder Marcos A. Aidukaitis
    • 2-Jun-1940 was an important day in his family. It is the day his father was baptized
    • reading the Book of Mormon brings great promises
    • NOTE: There was a brief power outage near the beginning of the talk, so I’m not sure what the exact topic of the talk was
  • Elder Dallin H. Oaks * might be used as a 4th Sunday lesson *
    • we live in perilous times spoken of by the apostle Paul
    • D&C 59:9-10
    • sacrament meeting is the only Sunday the whole family attends
    • importance of individual reverence
    • prepare for ordination of the sacrament
    • he read from Elder Nelson’s training from WWLT broadcast in 2003
bring broken heart and contrite spirit
      be seated early
have quiet time before sacrament meeting; prelude music should be subdued
    • appropriate dress (like going to the temple)
    • concentrate on worship
    • music is for worship, not for performance
  • President Dieter F. Uchtdorf * might be used as a 4th Sunday lesson *
    • shared a bit of the story of his family leaving Germany
    • his mother had faith and hope which led to action
    • he spoke of the infinite power of hope
    • hope is 1 leg of a 3-legged stool (faith and charity being the other 2)
    • if we have hope, why despair?
    • there must be opposition in all things
    • faith/doubt, hope/despair, charity/failure to act
    • the hope of Israel, Jesus Christ
    • hope is trust and confidence
