186th Semiannual General Conference – Saturday Morning General Session

186th_semiannual_general_conference_header-450x250

I wish I was at home watching this, but I’m working today, so I’m watching this during my lunch break (and then some). I’ll be able to get home before the next session, and then my sons and I will go out with my father and my brother-in-law for tonight’s session. We’ll watch both sessions at home tomorrow.

It is a brisk Fall day today, so it’s kind of nice to be inside. I’m looking forward to the warmth of the Spirit as we hear from the various leaders.

It looks like the First Presidency has changed the side they are sitting on. They used to sit on the left of the pulpit (when watching from the congregation). They are now on the right side. I wonder if that is so President Monson doesn’t have so far to walk.

My son and I were picked up by my father to go to the Church for the semiannual sub-sational. We enjoyed the food, and it was great seeing my son enjoying himself with the other YM. We then watched the session at the Church.

True Shepherds – President Monson speaks about Home Teaching

I was surprised to hear President Monson speak about home teaching at the Priesthood session of General Conference. It isn’t that I think that home teaching isn’t important, it’s that I don’t remember the last time a President of the Church has addressed the topic directly. It has been mentioned in passing, or spoken about by others, but this was different.

You can go and read/watch the talk yourself, but I did want to highlight some quotes:

  • …as the priesthood of God we have a shepherding responsibility.
  • The home teaching program is a response to modern revelation commissioning those ordained to the priesthood “to teach, expound, exhort, baptize, … and visit the house of each member, and exhort them to pray vocally and in secret and attend to all family duties, … to watch over the church always, and be with and strengthen them; and see that there is no iniquity in the church, neither hardness with each other, neither lying, backbiting, nor evil speaking.”
  • To assist in our efforts, I share this wise counsel which surely applies to home teachers. It comes from Abraham Lincoln, who said, “If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend.”
  • Home teaching answers many prayers and permits us to see the transformations which can take place in people’s lives.

Hearing this talk made me think back on a talk that Ezra Taft Benson gave in 1983. He spoke about home teaching, but rather than “preaching”, he asked a bunch of questions. I’m not sure exactly how many questions were asked, but there were 46 question marks in the published talk.

I find it a challenge to go home teaching, but I still make an effort and am able to visit most of my assigned families each month (at least the ones that let me in). Every time I leave a home, I feel like I’ve been doing a sacred work. The circumstances of life then creep up on me again the following month, and it is a struggle to go out again, but I remember the feelings and out I go. It’s worth it for sure.

After the last session, we watched some YouTube videos about Stephanie Nielson. What a story… what an example of perseverance!

We’re settled in now to watch the last session…

  • We can live every hour blessed by the help of priesthood power
  • A man may open the curtains, but doesn’t own the light and warmth

  • God speaks

  • True change can only come through the healing power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ

  • May we show increased kindness to one another

183rd Semiannual General Conference – Pre-conference notes

183_semiannual_gc_header

Life has gotten in the way of my blogging over the last month and a half, but I’m definitely going to get some postings up this weekend about General Conference. It seems that most times I’m at work for one of the sessions, but this weekend I’m off, so I’m going to watch all conference sessions at home. This will also include the Priesthood Session. My father and I talked about it, and we think we’ll watch this one and April’s conference at home, and then when my son is 12 for next October’s conference, we’ll go to the Church so he has that tradition of going out with us.

I have no insight whatsoever into what will be shared this weekend, but I assume that much of the same themes we’ve heard in other meetings this year will be continued. The Work of Salvation, along with strengthening families will be hot topics for sure.

Enjoy the conference!

My father and I went to the Church for about 6:45 pm so we could setup for the traditional sub-sational. We had about 22 people there and had lots of subs, chips, and pop. It was nice.

We watched the broadcast at the church and then my father and I still went out for another snack. We’ve done it for many years, and we want to keep the tradition alive. In another year and a half my oldest son will be able to join us.

As mentioned in my Pre-conference notes, I had to watch this session at work. I got called out of my office at about 11:45, and didn’t get back to my desk until almost 12:30. I was surprised to note how anxious I was to get to my computer and watch conference. I felt like I was missing something. Then throughout the session, I kept getting calls. Usually I can just sit there and watch, but not today. There must have been something that the Adversary didn’t want me to hear!

I thought it was interesting that the Church is promoting the #ldsconf hashtag

After the afternoon session, while the kids were eating dinner, we watched Joseph Smith The Prophet of the Restoration. It was very well done. My kids seemed to enjoy it. We live close enough to some of the sites (Palmyra and Kirtland) that we told them we’d visit the sites this summer.

I go to Church a little before 8 pm. A YM has just returned from his mission. While he was away, his parents moved, so he won’t be staying in the area. Tonight was the only chance to catch up with him.

Afterward, my father and I continued a tradition we’ve had for probably 20 years… We went out for food. We went to Boston Pizza where I got a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and a smoothie. Great times!

180th Annual General Conference – Saturday Morning Session

Another  General Conference is here. Time sure does fly by. Somehow or other it has worked out that I’m working again today, so I watched this session at work. I will be able to get home before the afternoon session starts.

I have no idea what the messages will be. The economy is slowly improving, but I’m sure there will still be some messages about being wise with our finances. I’m sure there will be messages about reaching out to less-actives. Of course, since it’s Easter weekend, I’m sure we’ll hear some good messages about Christ. A missionary from my ward is serving at Temple Square and helped at a General Authority luncheon. She got to meet President Monson, and he told them what he would be speaking on Sunday morning. This missionary wouldn’t tell us what it was, but said it starts with the letter “R”. We’ll see tomorrow if she’s right 🙂

As it has before, the Move Networks plug-in is amazing. It couldn’t get it to work with IE8 or Firefox 3.6.x, but I downloaded a portable version of 3.5.x and it worked fine.
