Immediately following the first session, we had some birthday cake for our daughter. She wanted an ice cream cake, so we got one from the local Dairy Queen.

We then went outside in our back yard to do some work. It was a little chilly, but when working it just felt like a beautiful Fall day. After about an hour, it started to rain, so we came back inside.

I didn’t do much Twitter or blog reading during the first session, but I did take a quick glance at By Common Consent. Someone left a comment asking if we could get Liam Neeson to do voiceovers for the foreign language talks. That would be awesome!

This day in history – The transcontinental railroad in the US is completed in Utah

I get an email from the New York Times each day with some top news stories, and also an “On this day” section. For today (Saturday, May 10, 2014), is has the following:

On May 10, 1869, a golden spike was driven at Promontory, Utah, marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States.

I’m not much of a historian, but I remember something in the Mountain of the Lord video that mentioned how the completion of the railroad really helped with the building of the Salt Lake Temple.

The Central Pacific Railroad Photographic History Museum has a short article about the Mormons who helped finish the railroad.

So, here I am with my father, sitting in our family room. This is weird! But I think I like it. The pizza and wings have been ordered and should be here mid-session. Like I mentioned earlier, I think we’ll do this in April as well, and then head back to the Church for when my oldest son joins us next October.

I wonder how many women are watching…

After the afternoon session, while the kids were eating dinner, we watched Joseph Smith The Prophet of the Restoration. It was very well done. My kids seemed to enjoy it. We live close enough to some of the sites (Palmyra and Kirtland) that we told them we’d visit the sites this summer.

I go to Church a little before 8 pm. A YM has just returned from his mission. While he was away, his parents moved, so he won’t be staying in the area. Tonight was the only chance to catch up with him.

Afterward, my father and I continued a tradition we’ve had for probably 20 years… We went out for food. We went to Boston Pizza where I got a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and a smoothie. Great times!
