Meta is announcing new resources to support small businesses throughout the holiday season.
Build PLATFORMS, not businesses.
There is so much we can learn from how the United States develops their markets & creates an environment for competition. The US is more obsessed with developing platforms for scale, not small businesses. To be clear, this doesn’t mean they don’t have policies and frameworks to develop small businesses. It means they focus their national policy instruments and stimulus on platforms. You need a platform for small businesses to build a community and reach consumers & advertisers: Meta. You need a platform for creators to create and distribute video: YouTube & Vimeo. You need a platform for creators to monetize their text: Gumroad. You need a marketplace platform for businesses: Amazon. You need a platform to enable businesses to scale their technology requirements & deploy at scale and at speed: AWS. You need a platform for text-based idea distribution (and some dragging) : Twitter. You need a platform to enable small businesses to accept payments & transact: Stripe & PayPal. Each of these platforms enables small businesses to build on top of their tech to scale quickly. Dear government: DON’T BUILD small businesses. BUILD platforms. Notice how China has done the same thing: Tencent, WeChat, Baidu. The list is endless.
